As It Is
This spring, the cherry blossoms refused to fall. Storm after storm swept through, yet the blossoms held on in full bloom. They opened on March 25th and continued their slow drift through the air until April 8th. Petals shimmered overhead, while fallen ones rolled across the ground, leaving the earth washed in pink. Heavy rain and strong winds arrived the day after the blossoms had filled both sky and ground. By then, I was ready to let them go.
A flower does not know that it is a flower. It simply moves with the flow of things. While walking, I caught a petal drifting toward me. In that moment, the petal became something special through me. Even if a flower withers where no one can see it, it remains a flower. The cycle of blooming and fading is natural. Some flowers are stepped on, some become nourishment for the soil, and some never bloom at all. Even so, each flower is complete in simply being what it is.
Life is no different. Every life is whole, beyond distinctions of good and bad. A life is never completed alone. It is made of countless fragments coming together. Even now, as I write these words in a small corner of Jeju, this ordinary moment quietly contributes to the world in its own way. Everything that exists has brought this moment into being. So, like cherry blossom petals scattered by the wind, I choose to trust the life unfolding before me. I let go of striving and allow myself to drift willingly. In doing so, the world and I become naturally connected. In the end, every life moves toward the same place. I choose to love this messy life. Not as a separate individual, but as part of a harmonious whole.
Looking back, driven by desire, my drawings became rigid. I put so much tension into the work that I carried that overwhelming feeling into the installation as well. That lack of ease showed in the work. This time, I left the work as it was — dirty if it became dirty, wrong if it became wrong. I allowed my fingerprints and the oil from my hands to stain the paper.
I let go of my own will, leaving room for the work to complete itself. My body is simply a tool for painting. There is no separation between the work and me. No boundary between self and other. I simply look at things as they are, feeling what naturally emerges. In this way, we move toward one another.
War, division, history, and countless events around us leave us confused and heavy. When confronted with broken relationships and hardships around us, we begin to feel disconnected from one another. There are moments when we feel ourselves growing small and hollow. May we not sink too deeply into despair.
Every step you have taken has brought you to this moment. And because you are here, these words now exist. Even your smallest actions can become a powerful wind, sending beautiful petals drifting out into the world. So, we only need to do what we can, right here where we stand. What begins as a movement for oneself will eventually reach others and the world.
